Mary Doherty of Wallaceburg passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Friday, August 15 2025, at the age of 103, 5 days short of 104th Mary was predeceased by her first husband Clarence Lumley (1943),  second husband George McKay (1974), third husband Vern Doherty (2008), her son Stuart Lumley (2021). Beloved mother of Phillip (Sandy) Lumley, stepson Sean (Helena) Doherty and Pat (Cathy) Doherty, daughter in law Jean Lumley. Special grandmother, great grandmother and great great grandmother of many. Predeceased by siblings Bertha Chrysler, Irene Falkener, Clarence Youngs, Andy Youngs, Myron Youngs, John Youngs and Mable Vanderveen. Mary was the daughter of the late Joseph and Beatrice Youngs. Mary went to school at Bethel in the late 1920’s, her family was very poor. She went to work at 15 years of age and married Clarence Lumley on the Bickford line in 1937 and became a widow at 21 years old with two boys. Times were very hard, and Mary worked at many places, she raised chicken and ducks with her in-laws. As time went by, she married Verne Doherty and had thirty years together. Mary enjoyed doing craft work and collecting things at yard sales when living in Wallaceburg. She enjoyed the company of friends in her little church, and she also wrote many poems over the last few years. She stopped driving at 99 years of age but was independent in her apartment on Montgomery drive. Losing her eyesight at 101 she was welcomed into Levante Retirement home on duke street in Wallaceburg (2022). She was known by everyone and really enjoyed the fireman when they came. She knew them all by name and she said she adopted a 85 year old resident named Ann as her daughter. She will be remembered for many things, by those that knew her and her times as a resident on duke street.

Funeral Details
Family and friends are invited to a funeral service on Tuesday, August 19, 2025 at 11 am at Steadman Brothers Funeral Home, Brigden with a visitation starting at 10am. Followed by a graveside service at Moore Union Cemetery.

    i didnt know her but just reading her obituary, what an amazing woman she was! She had a tough life but made the very best of it! Be proud to have known and loved her and always do your best to live up to her example! i am so sorry for your loss!

  9. Mary will be missed by our mom Anne ( her adopted at 85 year old daughter . Mary’s quick wit always made mom laugh . Mary loved our golden retriever Maggy .
