Dr. Ah-King “Danny” Li Wan Po

May 12, 1942 ~ January 14, 2026

IMG 6419 2It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Dr. Ah-King (Danny) Li Wan Po at his home, surrounded by family, on January 14, 2026, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Danny was born on the island of Mauritius on May 12, 1942. After graduating from Galway University, he spent nine years practicing medicine in Hong Kong, the United Kingdom, and Saskatchewan before settling in his forever home of Petrolia, Ontario. There, he served the community as a devoted family physician from 1970 until his retirement.
Danny loved Petrolia and his patients, enjoying his practice immensely. He often remarked that his greatest joy was delivering babies, and he took immense pride in having delivered multiple generations of “Hard Oilers.” Throughout his career, he was expertly supported by his dedicated staff: Sharon McGregor, Norma McIntyre, Jan Orvis, and Shelley Loerts. Many of his patients became close friends, several of whom provided great support and comfort during his illness.
Danny is survived by his five children: David (Ginette), Marc, Nicole (Darcy), Dalton, and Brandon (Sarah); and his two beloved grandchildren, Jack and Reese. He is also remembered by Jeanne (mother of his three eldest children) and Christine (mother of his two youngest children).
The son of the late Emmanuel and Ng Sun Lan, Danny was also predeceased by eight half-siblings. He is survived by his siblings Paul, Jacques, Alain, George, and Jacqueline, as well as his half-siblings James and Suzy, along with their respective spouses and many cherished nieces and nephews.
The family expresses their deep gratitude to his colleagues for their exceptional care and treatment: Dr. John Butler, Dr. Clifford, Dr. Kim, Dr. Lebert, Dr. Lam, and Dr. Mather, as well as his dedicated nursing and PSW team: Wendy, Sheila, and Christina.
Heartfelt thanks go to his family and inner circle of friends who were a steadfast source of support over the last three years: Christine Liwanpo and Bruce Thompson; Esther Waybrant; Francis and Lorie Haight and family; Ross and Debbie Pettigrew and family; Sue Mather and Mark Minielly; Florence Moore and Marcel Beaubien; Sharon and the late Stu McGregor; David and Carol Morgan; Gisele and the late Rick Bidner; Wendy Bidner; Bruce and the late Ginny Gray; and Randy Drydak.
In lieu of flowers, it was Danny’s final wish that those who would like to honor his memory practice a random act of kindness for a neighbor or a gesture of support for those less fortunate.
Cremation has taken place. A private gathering to celebrate Danny’s life and legacy will be held at a future date. Arrangements have been entrusted to Steadman Brothers Funeral Chapels, Brigden, Ontario.

  1. I went to Doctor Li when he came to Petrolia up until he retired. He was a kind hearted and the best doctor
    I ever had.

  2. To the family of Dr. Li .. he was a kind gentleman, always an attentive listener to everyone’s health issues. I thank him for taking such good care of my mom, my children, and myself. He always made time to deal with whatever ailments we were dealing with and would do so with a smile. I will be forever thankful to him … he was so dedicated to his profession – there is and was no one better. My sincere condolences for the loss of this great man.

  3. Your dad always made me smile! Always make time for everyone in that practice. To Nicole and Family I send my deepest and sincerest condolences.

  4. I will never forget Dr. Li. I was his first patient. Mom called Eleanor at the office to get me an appointment because of stomach pains, and she said she had a new doctor sitting in the office that nobody wanted to see, and all the other doctors were out or at the hospital. Mom just said “we’ll take him” and he was at our house on Eureka St. in less then 10 minutes. When he told me he just moved to Eureka St. I would see him every morning on the way to Queen E. At 23, I moved to Sarnia, he was still my doctor, then I moved to Thunder Bay (good thing I worked for an airline and could fly free!) still my doctor…then I got married and moved to Toronto, and HAD to get a new doctor. I would still have conversations with him over the years. He was such a fantastic, sweet and wonderful person. I will never forget you Dr. Li! You saved my life!

  5. Deepest condolences to Dr Li’s family and all who worked with him. He had a very big heart. Rest in peace Dr Li.

So sad to hear of this news . My family have been friends of Danny for many years. If Danny greeted me with his usual 2 word expletive I knew I was still on his good side .
